clefairy4 år sedan#5066503i don't know ANYTHING about ball jointed dolls so i don't even know what's considered "cheap" lmao. i'm wary bc it'd be so easy to rip me off since i have no point of reference... are there like, any specific communities that sell secondhand stuff like this?? can't find anything cheap on ebay......
this ryo is so cute i have to have him ;_; i wanna put him next to my christmas tree, he'd totally pass as a normal decoration !!!!
In that case I would highly recommend reading up on ball jointed dolls if you have and interest in purchasing this little guy. I wound up writing you a wall of information + links so I'm sticking it under a spoiler.
(It also might be kind of stream of conscious cause I've been in this hobby for a depressingly long time and have acquired a bunch of weird knowledge. If anything is confusing or you have any questions feel free to ask me, I'm happy to help! Especially anyone that's interested in the Devilman bjds >w<)
View spoilerHide spoilerFor starters, the Wikipedia article is actually pretty good for basic info on what a BJD is/isn't. en.wikipedia.or.... The article on Super Dollfies (what doll line Ryo comes from) is kind of out of date, but still may be helpful: en.wikipedia.or....
For Ryo in particular, he's a really weird sized doll. He's on a Yo SD body, but he has a larger head that is meant to go on what's called an SD Midi. So theoretically if you wanted him to be a larger doll, you could get a Midi body and put the head on it (pictures here, just keep scrolling). The accessories wouldn't fit though (aside from the head wings).
Most people don't like the Yo-Midi combination so I think that's half of why these guys weren't particularly popular. I guess they did it to mimic the super deformed Devilman anime style? I think it's cute, personally.

While I really doubt you would have to worry about it with for Ryo since they weren't popular, bootlegs and recasts have become a big issue in this hobby so be very careful who and where you buy from! If it comes as a full set you're probably safe. When purchasing a Volks doll in particular, always look for their identification papers. Many BJD companies also set a medallion in the back of the doll's head cap with at least the company's name/logo. Volks does this (and generally lists the doll name/number) buuuut their medallions have a habit of popping off very easily so I think only half my dolls from them even have a medallion on their head currently. >w< Unfortunately though, recasters have even copied head medallions, so it can be kind of dire sometimes. I'm at the point where if I were to buy more dolls (unlikely) second hand that I would only buy dolls new or from people or companies that I trust.
Here's a general guide on what to keep in mind when buying a doll so that you're getting the real thing!

I was looking for comparison photos because some of them can be uncomfortably close to the original, but I'm not having any luck finding comparison guides for some reason!

The Devilman BJDs were, to my knowledge, incredibly unpopular as they've remained in stock from Volks for a loooooooooong time (2 years so far). I just checked and you can still buy them direct from Volks. That means that they should be cheaper on Mandarake or y!J or some other second hand seller, but right now that's not looking like the case. I checked Mandarake for you and the one they have is not a full set and it's face has been altered, among other things. So, I'd pass on that one. It's going for 50000 which is kind of ridiculous considering? So I'd pass on that one! There are no full sets on y!J either at the moment. The only one I can find is being sold in pieces, so at this current point in time the best option is still direct from Volks since they've still got them in stock. A-at least the exchange rate is really good?
Btw, when I search for them at either place I just use the kanji for his name, 飛鳥 了.

The Japanese second hand market is usually a lot more realistic about the price, and I've seen some full sets of older/less popular dolls on Mandarake go for what I would consider dirt cheap (relatively speaking) now. I've been in this hobby for so long that I'm still in the mindset that all dolls retain their full value or go up in price, as that's how it was when I started and for quite a long time after. That's also how the Dollfie Dream (a different type of doll with a similar name. Confusing!) market still works. Now the market is saturated with so many doll types and companies, so the less popular ones tend to go down in price on the 2nd hand market over time. Mandarake/Japanese 2nd hand sellers occasionally discount like crazy.)

I would say almost never buy a doll or doll items on eBay! Everyone just tries to gouge prices or scam you there.

I've done that, actually! He's very heavy for his size (especially with the wings attached) so I couldn't put him up close to the top as I'd hoped, but he definitely sits in my tree closer to the bottom.
