One of the top-selling Japanese RPG series of all time, worldwide. Developed by Game Freak, and published by Nintendo.

The plot of a Pocket Monsters game typically involves a boy or a girl who leaves home to go on a quest to befriend, catalog, train, and battle wild animals called Pocket Monsters, or Pokémon. The ultimate goal is to become the Pokémon Champion, first by defeating local Gym Leaders, and then the members of the Pokémon League.

There is also a huge social element to Pokémon. Most new games in the series typically come out two at a time (Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl, Black/White, etc.), and there are some Pokémon who do not appear in both games. However, these Pokémon can be obtained by trading with other players who own the complimentary game. Players can also battle and do other in-game activities with each other.

The mainline Pokémon series is iterative; each new set of games that comes out plays basically the same, while adding on new features, and improving upon the core formula. New Pokémon also appear between games.

Pokémon has been wildly successful since its first installments, and has had several spinoffs, from other games to anime and manga. It is also a merchandising phenomenon, with a wide range of products available.
