I feel a lot of conflicting emotions for collecting, I’m working towards a better place and growing out of some of my collection while refining my preferences and focuses which feels a lot better now than the hopeless place I have felt several times over the past couple years.
So amidst all of the ups and downs (and boy have I been dragging through a lot of downs lately) I finally felt a spark for collecting come back in its purest form...finding a figure I really actually liked AND successfully hunting down a deal I could afford at the time...TIMES TWO!!
It all started during a browse of all things Rin Tohsaka on offer when I chanced upon an amazing deal for a GSC Rin and Aquamarine Archer. But Archer was without his box and Rin missing a few accessories that admittedly I didn’t care about. I thought about it, wrote it off, but couldn’t stop thinking about it for over an hour. I had the funds and I felt a little chancey...so I used my proxy to put in a buy request.
Due to the way Neokyo works, the timing just didn’t work out and I did not win the purchase. Before I go on, I do want to say, I do not blame Neokyo for the protocols they have to use.
But losing that first purchase made me realize...I wanted that Rin and Archer more than I realized. I mean, I REALLY wanted them. It has been so, so long since I felt this much pull and draw for a figure, then alone two.
So I set off to make a game plan, drafting up how many places I could find the two separate figures and how much each listing or site was offering them for. I calculated my finances to find what part of my leisure budget could be devoted to this adventure, and then I threw wide the gates.
I learned that I could not trust Neokyo would be my greatest proxy ally in this quest, and looked into Buyee which sometimes can purchase immediately from Mercari JP. I hadn’t heard all the best things about them but decided to chance it anyway. I found a pretty alright deal for Rin on Mercari and bought her immediately through Buyee and got confirmation quickly.
That then left Archer. I was a little anxious to get him because I worried with Aquamarine’s bankruptcy their old figures would incrementally increase in price and rarity on the pre-owned market. I ended up using Neokyo to buy him from Amazon JP since the listing I decided on couldn’t ship to me themselves (and I still had funds in my Neokyo wallet from the first purchase attempt that I didn’t want to go to waste). He was finally secured and I merely had to wait for both figures to arrive at their respective warehouses and then I’d be shipping them via DHL and FedEx to myself!
The wait was killer ;^;
FINALLY, after they arrived and I arranged shipment, I only had to wait a couple days to receive them myself, which has been the best upside to FedEx and DHL shipments. DHL has actually become my favorite shipping method as I’ve had no issues and like my delivery person, but I have had no issues with FedEx either.
This whole adventure was fun and felt invigorating, to feel that spark pushing me and that anxious neediness in obtaining something being sated with satisfaction...I really missed that about collecting. Pre-Ordering is nice and all, but you don’t get the same high as finding a deal secondhand, at least to me haha! (But I hope to just play things safe with the PO game these days when/if I can).
And here are the pictures of my victory’s spoils! I was SUPER lucky to get the 2nd edition of Rin which has a more matte finish on her paint which I much prefer to the shiny variant of her outfit of the 1st edition of the figure (which actually put me off from putting her on my wishlist for the longest time - years even!) Also whoa is Archer’s box unnecessarily HUGE lmao.
Rest of the pictures below the spoiler cut!!
Don’t mind my doll in some of the shots, she’s just cute and I wanted her there for size comparison’s sake - she’s about 150 mm / 5.5 in tall.
