Urgent Q about a possible Syrian knockoffUrgent Q about a possible Syrian knockoffAsk MFC

Yesterday I found a set of anime dolls previously unknown to me. They were listed as "modest Muslim dolls", but they were obviously manga style. A bit of research brought me to Arabian Space Toon channel and then to a Syrian kids magazine of the same name. I guess they use the image of Kinomoto Sakura with an altered colour scheme as their mascot? What do they call her then? Could anyone possibly tell me more about this?

I Do Not Know?

Yoruno1 månad sedan#82090797It does interest me, thank you!
As for the dolls, I've already written a short review. shoujodolls.com... I know now where they borrowed the mold from. But I like your idea about investigating the origin of clothes!
As for the mashups, I remember they also used to make them in Korea, and they were more than trash because they also contained propaganda (Solar Adventure is a notorious example).

Interesting write-up, especially to see where her original head sculpt comes from! The dolls indeed look 'too good' for cheap knock-offs. Such strange things.

That was interesting to find out and read up on Solar Adventure! In the 80's and 90's there was a lot of weird stuff out there before the more 'normal' censoring we know of nowadays.

I can't really say anything specific about Spacetoon, but I do have a very similar experience when I visited Egypt in 2010 and saw their anime channel (maybe it was Spacetoon actually)...

sarious2 månader sedan#80732321My guess is it was something like an unlicensed robotech where the moshed together a bunch of series.

^It was basically that!

The whole channel was just...random anime mashed together. They were compilation videos with no dubbing, everything was singing in Arabic, I assume someone singing a story? They mainly had 80's and 90's anime, and there seemed to just not be a logical way of how everything was edited together. There also seemed to be a lot censored/cut off/edited (indeed hair color changes, outfit changes, and the list can go on), the editing was so weird. I got so many questions watching it:
- Is this old material bought years ago that they are still showing?
- Are newer series so expensive they can only buy older ones?
- How does the license holder even allow such heavy editing/altering?
- Has actually any sort of license deal/purchase been made? This was especially in my mind because the video quality differed so much from every switch to a different series, that I was thinking it just looked like they grabbed them somewhere off the internet and just went with it.

I also made a ~10 minute recording back then because of how flabbergasted I was. I only have it on an old computer out of my reach though (it's at my parents' place on the other side of Europe). Now I want to watch it again, because this blog brought all my memories back.

Anyway back to your topic, I am surprised to see they made their own merchandise with such an 'altered' character. I don't know if you are interested in buying them, but I saw multiple variations in stock at this shop: modestbarbieclo... . I guess we could make quiz games out of them...guess which body and which head belong to which anime character? LOL

Priceless! Thanks for the research. Interesting how they even mashed up a body from Kanon... Creative copycatting has no limit.

whys2 månader sedan#80732480I believe she is (or was) a mascot for the girls' programming block on the Arabic channel Spacetoon. The most recent thing I could find featuring her was a tweet from 2016. The program block is called Planet Zamrda/زمردة (Emerald) and I think that's her name too. Going by what I saw on eBay, there was a line of Spacetoon dolls and the other hair colored Sakura's are different girls in that line.
I visited family oversees a few times in the past and I remember watching a lot of Spacetoon and being caught off guard by off-brand Sakura. This was about 15 years ago so my memory's a bit fuzzy, I remember her only showing up in the bumpers in between shows and I don't think she was even animated back then lol.

Thanks a lot! The other two dolls are called Hiba and Siba, but I can't find any mentions of them. Probably inside the magazines? I feel that Spacetoon didn't feel very secure about borrowing CLAMP's design (and I can see why), so probably they just draw this quasi-Sakura and left it to readers/viewers to guess whether it was Hiba or Siba or Zomoruda. She's not even mentioned anywhere as the official mascot of the channel.

Don't know if she had a bigger presence in the magazines. But those look like regular kid's magazines with activities and features on the shows that were airing.

Unrelated: I was always jealous that it seemed like every other country but the US had aired World Masterpiece Theater anime (e.g.: Romeo's Blue Skies, Nobody's Girl Remy, Anne of Green Gables).

I found this list of shows they've broadcast, but no mention of CCS or Kanon.

I also searched the shows listed as "Zomorada" which is likely another version of the "Zomorruda" that's on box and didn't see anything that looked like bootleg CCS/Kanon.

My guess is it was something like an unlicensed robotech where the moshed together a bunch of series.

I be there's a neat story behind this. Don't see things like this very often. I wonder if the magazine contains manga as well, maybe reconstructed from the actual source material?

EDIT: Wikipedia says Spacetoon has 130 million viewers globably, which is not small. They broadcast existing shows, so I imagine they must have licensing agreements with the rights holders. The Spacetoon store is currently down, but the Spacetoon Iraq store (which I assume is affiliated) carries many unlicensed copies and counterfeits.

I guess there is no copy right in some part of the world , so they can use any image to sell their products .
