-Introduction-

Hello MFC, welcome to a new series Figure Archaeology. I'm digging up some vintage figures to reintroduce such nice products of the times. These mentioned items are quality selections that I would consider storing in time capsules lol.

-Overview-

The first old figure I want to talk about is Nao made by Good Smile Company ITEM #322

Welcome back to 2006.

Sorry for lack of pictures since I won't be able to take photos myself.
I asked someone to do snapshots on a phone.

Please check out the database gallery for more pictures.

-Specs-

It's an 1/8 PVC, 19cm tall, which was the standard scale back in 2006.
Sculpted by Hiro,Kawagoe Hiromitsu. ENTRY #27973
He did Kuramoto Erika so you know his is legendary.
She was priced at around 4000 yen.
The exchange rate at that time was about 1 USD to 116 JPY. JPY rate didn't change much.
About $ 34.48 USD in 2006 should be approximately $43.85 USD equivalent to date.
So you get an idea about the price level for an average PVC.

Fortunately, her product page still exists.

What is Mabinogi?

Mabinogi is an MMORPG based on the Mabinogion, a Welsh anthology of legend, and the settings are related to Welsh mythology. The everlasting MMORPG which is always argued the best MMORPG against those who suggests WOW. When Celtic culture is rarely portraited, players considered Mabi as a fresh take of Mythologies other than Olympia stuffs.

Operated by Nexon in NA, developed by devCat. It utilises an unique battle system that is anti-cheating in nature as it requires precise attack timing and good reading of opponents' moves.
The mastermind is to make a MMO that bots won't work.

About Nao Mariota Pryderi

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/12/2473976.jpeg

Nao is the gatekeeper of Soul stream. Basically a Custom officer who guide players into the in-game universe. You, the player, is supposed to be summoned by Morrighan into the game in order to save the in-game world. This is more immersive than .hack/SAO cuz you aren't playing the game, you're in the game. You lose memory when you "back to Earth".

Nao guides players, providing newbie supports as well as resurrecting unconscious players. And she celebrates players' in-game birthday.

Thus, She is considered soft, kind-heart and quietly caring girl. Since she seldom talk about her personal affairs. It leaves her identity mysterious. In an outfit like a China dress with big busts, she becomes waifu material for many. Researches found that, Mabinogi players have higher return rate and higher average spending. I wonder how much Nao contributed to the success of Mabinogi. Mabi is still alive today, you can launch it via Steam.

-About the figure-

This is a figure with very basic standard posture.
Good shape and shading on her hair, and there're a pair of ribbons to add cuteness.

What I love is the translucent hem of the China dress is overkilling.
It's still one of the best see-through effects on figures ever.
And the silk stockings look shiny and silky that only amp up thiccness.
While the shepherd's crook looks really like wooden. Still a top-notch finish to emphasise the material.

However, the silver floral printing on the dress isn't faithful to the design.
It's supposed to be black-on-black embroidery.
You can clearly see what technical limitations these aged figures have.

It's a pity that such a potential character didn't get many merchandises to follow.

-Rating-

Sculpting 9
Overall pretty well done consider the age of this figure.

Painting 9
Other than the floral print, everything else is top class back in 2006.

Posing 6
a relaxing standing pose. Not much to comment.

Base 6
a plain plate with her feet fixed.

Packaging 7

Enjoyment 9
Well worth it I still miss the old time when figures are quite affordable.
And GSC is always making gorgeous products with great value.

But I guess once the prices rocketed, there's no way back.
Now we need to take whatever the prices are to enjoy this niche hobby.

I hope you enjoy your time with Nao.
Feel free to leave me comments and share your thoughts.

victorviper1 månad sedan#80286295I always like to see reviews of older figures like this. When I first started collecting, you would see this figure along with ITEM #639 everywhere; I never got either of them since I didn't know the source, but I always thought both figures looked kind of cool.
I kind of miss those simpler times, and the prices, too. I distinctly remember paying $40 for ITEM #3 brand new from a US shop. These days, if you order a Max Factory figure from a US reseller, you'd be lucky to pay less than $150.

Hey, Victor! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Mabinogi is indeed a masterpiece of MMORPG. But now we've ripoffs in-app purchase mobile games instead.

That Succubus, I remember that how I got overwhelmed by her. Really wild character design.
As I can recall, her figure is really popular, many non-players bought her while Nao only attracted players.
Back to that time I was still a kid, couldn't "catch 'em all". So I went for Nao.

She has a special mechanism in the game:
A counterattack will castoff one layer of her clothes. lol

Yup, GSC back in that time is godly.
Max factory quality + Kotobukiya prices
So I have faith in GSC!

I really miss the old time when figs are something elementary students could afford by eating less sushies and snacks. lmao

I really hope other users could also share about their experiences decades ago.
it's fun to look back to childhood memories.
