REVIEW: Kimetsu no Yaiba Kamado Nezuko ARTFX J figure
https://i.postimg.cc/yNJw3GmL/257q160.jpg

Here I come with my latest review of the ARTFX J Nezuko figure, fresh off my last review of her brother Tanjiro (BLOG #45780 if you are interested) :D In case you are unfamiliar with the character, Kamado Nezuko is the main female character of the Kimetsu no Yaiba (or Demon Slayer) series. She is the younger sister of the series protagonist Kamado Tanjiro, and she was attacked and turned into a demon at the start of the series - kicking off the siblings' journey to fight demons and find a way to eventually turn her back into a human. I followed the manga to its end this year, and will likewise follow the beautifully-animated series by Ufotable.

Nezuko is probably one of the most ADORABLE female characters I have ever come across - I love how she is so strong and cute at the same time (her ability to shift into a smaller younger version is just overflowing with moe points XD). And my best boy Zenitsu is her love interest so I love them both even more :)

This is Nezuko's first scale figure released in the market, to be followed by the one by Aniplex. I had previously stated in my ARTFX J Tanjiro review that I definitely preferred Koto's Tanjiro over Aniplex's... but it is the contrary for his sister. From the prototype photos, I think Aniplex did Nezuko's face much more accurately... but I ended up going with Koto's Nezuko here for several reasons - I wanted a battle pose like her brother (the Aniplex pose was a no-no for me), and also because I was going to get Tanjiro and Zenitsu from Koto because I personally thought those two were better.

I purchased Nezuko for a total equivalent of JPY 8,800 inclusive of shipping.

THE BOX & PACKAGING: 8.5/10
https://i.postimg.cc/yNJw3GmL/257q160.jpg

Nezuko's box is similar in design to the Tanjiro one with a hexagonal box window over the front showcasing the figure. They utilized the colour pink as Nezuko's trademark colour over the black-and-white theme, though strangely enough I did not find it as beautifully contrasting as Tanjiro's green box. Nezuko's box is small (smaller than Tanjiro's) and more wide than tall given that the figure is crouching. Shipping will definitely NOT be a pain.

The back of the box features a large single image of the figure with the same falling snow theme, similar to her brother's.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474414.jpeg

The packaging is very good and secure. There is no manual as the figure does not come with any accessory, but if you get her with the bonus head there will be a tiny instruction sheet as the head swapping will require some fiddling around.

THE SCULPT: 9.0/10
THE PAINT: 9.0/10

https://i.postimg.cc/yNJw3GmL/257q160.jpg

Of all the aspects of her figure, I find her eyes the most uncharacteristic. Her black eye slits are made much longer than they should be, and they also significantly dulled the colour of her center pupils - as a result of both, she looks more catlike than demon. I also felt that both the end-lashes of her eyes (a beautiful trademark of Nezuko's) should have been made longer.

Comparison with the anime demon Nezuko. You can definitely see the differences straight off.

https://medias.spotern.com/spots/w640/236/236684-1570116201.jpg

The veins over her forehead are alright for me, there had been online complaints that they were almost nonexistent. Personally for me, they are prominent at just the right amount to be noticeable and not overly done to be ugly or distract from the rest of the figure. The ribbon and bamboo gag are both done well, there's even shading on the bamboo.

Her face looks great at certain angles compared to others, like from this side angle below. The full frontal view of her face just hits me as not very Nezuko-like.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474456.jpeg

Her hair has its plus and minus features for me. The sculpt of her hair is definitely fantastic, they did the hairline very nicely and her hair strands really give off the impression of movement and wind to the overall pose. I have no problems with the modification they did to the orange ends of her hair (instead of a gradual transition of colour in the initial prototype, Kotobukiya switched to a straight slash of colour, which is accurate to the anime), but I feel that the black hair paint is too glossy for my taste. I assume that they did it to differentiate her black hair from the black shade of her haori but to me, it cheapens the look of the figure. I would have preferred the hair being a matte black.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474454.jpeg

There are small spots where the orange paint is uneven on two or three hair ends of my figure. The ends are soft and bendy so do take care when handling those parts.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474455.jpeg

Her nails have a nice touch of red to their tips.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474483.jpeg

The pattern sculpt of her upper kimono is pretty rough, at least for my figure. The paint job is nicely done and clean. The sculpt of the lower white folds of her kimono are also well done.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474459.jpeg

The sculpt of her kimono pattern is better over the lower part of her kimono.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474461.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474463.jpeg

The sculpt and paint over the socks and sandals are also nicely done.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474462.jpeg

I received the bonus face plate as well so I guess I might as well touch on it. The plate fixes on well and smoothly without problem, after removing the crown and side hair.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474548.jpeg

I think Kotobukiya struggled with BOTH faces - the different pupils rendered her not as accurate to the real character as I would have liked her to be. The eyelashes are again too short (anime photo below for comparison). It's a bit of a shame because I think everything else about this figure is great.

THE BASE: 7.5/10
https://i.postimg.cc/yNJw3GmL/257q160.jpg

The snow base is similar to her brother's, very plain without much colour going on - but with good sculpt of the ice tracks made by her feet.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474465.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474464.jpeg

And once again, the base is very space-friendly - I really appreciate that I can have her posed close to Tanjiro without worrying about wide edges of bases knocking into each other.

THE POSE: 9.5/10
https://i.postimg.cc/yNJw3GmL/257q160.jpg

I personally love her pose very much - Nezuko with her demon mode activated and ready for battle. I love the stance and the dynamic pose with her hair spread out behind her in motion.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474465.jpeg

Her side poses and back angle looks great too!

Pose with the bonus head. (This photo is a bit blurry, I only realized this after I put the figure away)

FINAL THOUGHTS
https://i.postimg.cc/yNJw3GmL/257q160.jpg

I would have loved this figure so very much if her eyes had been done better. I think every other aspect is kicking - her battle pose, the sculpt and generally clean paintwork. Knowing what I know now and having unboxed her, if given a chance to choose again between this and the Aniplex one - I would still choose this one - mainly because of the battle pose and my preference for the demon appearance. If the big guns eg. Megahouse or Alter comes out with a better Nezuko, I will swap but for now, this figure is sticking with me.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474555.jpeg

One nice point I noticed is that the ARTFX Nezuko and Tanjiro, when posed together, beautifully enhance each other much more than they would standing solo. Kotobukiya obviously went into this with a bigger picture in mind. I can't wait to add Zenitsu to the fold, and maybe a snowy background - I think the display will be great.

This figure is very popular, currently being the top 76th most ordered figure on MFC, and despite my less-than-satisfactory opinion on her eyes and the glossy hair - she is worth the money spent for me (especially when purchased and put together with the brother). Considering many aspects including my enjoyment for the figure, I would rate her an overall 8.5 out of 10. Would I recommend her? Yes, if you can get her for a good price. If you have a similar opinion like me over her eyes, you may not like spending so much on an aftermarket price - but everyone's limit boils down to personal financial preference. If you don't find her eyes problematic at all, you will love this figure! And you never know, she may remain the best demon Nezuko figure for quite some time - considering Megahouse's tendency to bungle figure scale sizes of the same line (*coughNARUTOGALScough*) or God forbid, sculpt big boobs on her or MANGA SPOILER View spoilerHide spoilerThen again, they may just jump straight to making adult demon Nezuko... though I may actually buy that one too! :D Well, that's the beauty of figure-collecting, there's so many figure companies and we never know what's coming in the future *insert Forrest Gump quote*

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/13/2474583.jpeg

More Nezuko goodness.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/12/2473913.jpeg

And that's it for the super long review, sorry if I rambled too much and congratulations if you have made it this far and thank you for reading! I am curious as to what others think of her, so feel free to share your opinion :) Till the next review.

PROS
- Dynamic battle pose
- Relatively clean sculpt and paintwork
- Fairly cheap price (though aftermarket ones may have risen)
- Really small box (shipping heaven)

CONS
- Eyes not accurate to character (personal opinion)
- Overly glossy hair paint (also personal opinion)
- Very plain base
- Aftermarket prices have risen (for now)

JuuzousAnimegirl9 dagar sedan#81395889I agree about the hair being too glossy. Also, the pink on the trim I have already talked to you about, I am not a fan of. It should be bright white, like the anime. I thought the sculpting of her feet, legs, arms, and face were done well, but her haori was not as impressive as Tanjiro’s.

Tanjiro I gave a solid 10/10, which is rare for me.

Zenitsu’s figure is the reason I bought this entire line. I was swooning over it starting in October, and he’s not even my favorite character.

I agree with all your points about Nezuko, I hadn't previously noticed that the trim and the underside of her robe was pale pink - but now that you pointed it out, I totally agree it should have been done white. It's good that you like the eyes, they still prevent me from liking this figure more XD

And yes, Tanjiro was definitely much better done in execution and design, wasn't he? I love that figure too. And I am also likewise looking forward to Zenitsu, he is my favourite male character in the series so I hope his figure turn out good.

I thought the sculpting of her feet, legs, arms, and face were done well, but her haori was not as impressive as Tanjiro’s. Mine has a slight defect in the paint application that looks like a scratch. I let it go, but it’s definitely noticeable. Also, I found it hard to secure her alternate face plate. It wouldn’t align just right and I was scared I would break a piece off. I actually disagree a bit about her eyes. They are my favorite part with the sweet face. They draw me into the figure. I can see what you mean with the angry face, though, being different from the anime. Overall, I think the quality of sculpting and paint for the faces was done very well. All in all, I give her an 8.5/10. Tanjiro I gave a solid 10/10, which is rare for me. The bases are plain and could have more complexity, but I like the snow concept with the tracks from their feet. Although, as a friend pointed out, the anime takes place in spring. There is no snow after the point Tanjiro gets his sword. Still, for a simple base, I like the concept. Zenitsu’s figure is the reason I bought this entire line. I was swooning over it starting in October, and he’s not even my favorite character. I just absolutely love the pose, and I think the snow works best for his figure. I have high hopes for him. Don’t let me down, Koto. I ordered mine through KotoUS, so since they come later, I have a chance to check out photos ahead of time. I don’t normally order with them, but I didn’t know where else to get the bonus heads. Tanjiro’s figure had to be smiling. I think it’s the best face of any figure released yet of him. He might be the most kind-hearted, optimistic, anime character in existence. He deserved a good smile. I digress. Haha. This post was about Nezuko. <3 :)

Whoa. I am blown away by this. I have severe OCD (the disease, not the cute trait), and this reminds me of something I would take the time to do. How did you do the Scores? How did you do ANY of it? Haha. I am terrible at navigating this site. I would love to do this for my figures.

Bananapanda441 månad sedan#80370738Thank you for the review, it's nice to see an in-depth look at this figure.
I will confess that I cancelled my preorders for both Nezuko and Tanjiro. Partly because I decided I was shelling out way too much money for these figures as a result of my hype from watching season 1. The first few user pictures I saw did make it easier for me to follow through with cancelling though.
I think Tanjiro looks really good. His face is a little less expressive than the prototype but all the details are there. Nezuko really disappointed me with the glossy hair. I agree, it makes her look like a prize figure. And her angry face didn't turn out how I expected. However, your pictures show that her and her brother look nice displayed together. I do hope the rest of the line turns out well; their Zenitsu prototype looks awesome

And thanks for reading. Yes, I felt Tanjiro came off much better than his sister did. I will still be keeping Nezuko until a better figure of her comes out. I already have Zenitsu preordered since end of last year (got all three of them in a bunch) so I hope he will turn out good.

Drizzyrissy1 månad sedan#80370279My guess is koto didn’t have the finances to re do all of the faceplates to make them look like the anime. Just a hypothesis
Definitely possible. My guess is that they probably wanted to push out their figures sooner.

I haven’t read the manga so I can only go by pictures online, but I think Koto initially wanted to base the figure off of her appearance in the manga not the anime. If you look at her eyes with the Japanese symbols in it, that’s only present in her manga illustration, same with the small elongated slits. I remember koto had her hair fading into orange from the black but that was change when I guess people complained it wasn’t like the anime. My guess is koto didn’t have the finances to re do all of the faceplates to make them look like the anime. Just a hypothesis

galablue1 månad sedan#80369824I am glad you like this figure, she looks nice in front of your fold out stand (not sure what that's called but it is beautiful). However, to me, this figure is very mediocre. I have to remind myself that it is from Kotobikuya, but there are some serious issues with the figure. I will agree with you, her pose is awesome, I like that she is like a cat ready to pounce ... but the details and small things are done so poorly. Her top of her kimono design is just very sloppy looking, and to me some of her paint job reminds me of a prize tier (I am probably going too far though because she looks decent from far away in your pictures). I am not sure if I like either of her face plates. The issue I have is that the pictures you linked of her are WAY better than her PVC face plates. Even her non-veiny face looks badass in the anime. However, in PVC, I feel like her faces just look like they somehow do not fit with her. Plus, I know the veins are part of her character, but I just don't find them overall appealing. I'm glad I passed on this one, but I loved your review (also I do like the base/box of this figure, but agree that Tanjiros' box was more striking).
Yeah, both face plates really pained me. I think it's the hair gloss that makes her look like a prize figure - which is also the other issue I have with her. Thanks for reading and I am glad you liked the review :D
