Figure Review: Cirno POP Version (Griffon Enterprises)Figure Review: Cirno POP Version (Griffon Enterprises)Review

Happy weekend everybody,

Cirno is my favorite Touhou character, and always will be; this boundless love was appended by the arrival of my newest ice fairy. While this figure has its share of quality gripes, and I paid way too high a premium for it, I really don't care. I'm too happy with this figure to assign any care to these things normally considered as flaws at all, because this is Cirno and she is the strongest.

To begin, I'd like to note that I was going to take a picture of Cirno in her box, but I mean look at it.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468648.jpeg

I pretty much opened the packaging in a really careful, but also really panicked, manner, which nullified any chance of recording this unboxing; not only was the box as you see, but one of the plastic halves of the inner shell as well. Strangely, there was no tape on the box, nor the plastic housing.

Thankfully, Cirno survived her overseas journey unscathed.

Before detailing the painting and the sculpting job, I'd like to convey my gratitude from the figure requiring no assembly at all; Cirno is already attached to her base. To this point, I've had no other example of a figure requiring no assembly. Why can't they all be like this?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468649.jpeg

There were some plastic squares by her wings, but in the mad dash I honestly can't recall where they were in detail. There's another plastic square by her feet, which would require separating Cirno from the base to remove, which means I probably won't be taking this square off.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468650.jpeg

This base is similar to the one for my Tewi figure, given that the same company released the pair: a black base with significant size and a golden-colored nameplate; from the visual side of things, it gives off an air of class and quality to match the figure. It doesn't feel as substantial as it looks, but that's really not that big of a deal.

So this is at the top tier of the moé scale. POP's character design is uniquely childlike, so it makes sense that such a quality is translated here, to the point of transforming Cirno; in the Touhou series, Cirno is an idiotic and overly confident character, but here, only cuteness abounds in how POP interprets Cirno.

Her pose involves really chubby arms and legs, with the wrists not being prominent; with her right arm not in frontal view, and her left near her head as you see, Cirno gains a playful and mischievous look. I love the detail of her legs, with their baggy socks and the shoes that look like clogs, and the attention to detail payed to her right kneecap.

Her face has a blush composed of two sets of pink, vertical lines, with prominent cheeks and a mouth that is lightly recessed. I feel like her neck goes up a little too high, but her hair hides this effectively.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468653.jpeg

Going to the hair, the shading changes are a nice touch, which are present around the seam as well. The strands go up enough of a height to break apart the blue, and although the following is only true for the front half of the hair, the strands move away as though she is in some wind, or perhaps from a twirl. The bow is quite substantial and is its own darker shade of blue.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468654.jpeg

In that same vein, I love her crystal wings; they too are prominent and look the part of real frozen ice. Them also being blue is a nice touch.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468655.jpeg

Her dress has detailed motion sculpted into it at every angle, as well as an unambiguous body line. The creases in the dress are also able to be appreciated when viewing Cirno from above.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468656.jpeg

Unfortunately, the paint for the dress is not really quality. The blue is fine, but the white triangles seem to have some blue that looks sprayed on at random intervals. I thought that the heat did this during transit (because I live in Houston, which has 90s both in temperature and humidity for summers), but the packaging shows the dress having a similar appearance, which leads me to think of this as not a true defect. The triangles are also not fluid in their attachment to the dress proper.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/04/2468657.jpeg

Furthermore, the blue is not evenly lined up against the blouse. Continuing around this area, while the sleeves are nice and puffy, there are some gaps by where they attach to the shoulders. Similarly, the red ribbon is not too detailed; it really needs more dimension to make the strings look more separated as they are tied to form this ribbon.

There are also some areas where the dress looks wet from the way its light reflects, like it was just painted or the paint job wasn't treated properly.

Overall, I like the dress' colors and how it was sculpted, but the painting just falls behind.

I was on the fence about getting this figure for around 2 months, but I'm really happy that I bought it. However, ¥6,800/~$63 (the original price on the packaging) is way more in line with what I feel the figure is worth objectively, but given the updates in this figure's entry being around ¥16/18,000 new, I'm getting the feeling that the high demand for this Cirno is being factored in. Sometimes, I get a good deal when buying a figure, and this was the opposite of that.

But when I look at Cirno's face, I get the feeling that this figure was worth it after all.

Weboshidori2 månader sedan#80284975Coincidentally, one of the reasons why I held back on getting this was that I too thought that the figure doesn't look true to POP's more familiar character design; exactly as you said, I ultimately bought it more for Touhou than for POP.

What some POP figures suffer from is imo not nailing the eye style and in some scenarios the figure overall should have been in a more pastel color scheme. It doesn't make certain figures bad, but to grab some other examples: If I were to ever buy any of these ITEM #54025 ITEM #52723 ITEM #52725 ITEM #54026 ITEM #54122 ITEM #54123 , they wouldn't even fit with the figures from my POP displays!

I used to shortly be into Touhou, used to have multiple of the Nendoroids and some smaller goods. Back then this would have been a neat addition, but nowadays and looking at how my displays are set-up...hrm, I guess I will only buy this Cirno or the others from this set if I have some good fitting space for them once my collection is fully set up again (I recently went through a move and my new displays are going to be very different from before).

I have a similar issue with ITEM #5704 and ITEM #5703 , which are from another one of my favorite artists: ENTRY #8348 . The figures by themselves are cool, but they just don't scream Akio Watanabe to me.

Maakie2 månader sedan#80283950Thank you for this review! This figure has been on my wishlist for a long time as I'm a huge fan of POP. However, even though the figure is super cute, it does not 100% feel 'POP' to me so that's why I have been doubting a lot about getting her or not, and in the end don't own her.
You seem to have bought it as a Touhou fan so you judge this figure in a completely different way than me, haha. Overall, I think she is still very cute. I love how her wings and the ribbon on her head look. The baggy socks are also 100% POP-y cute. :)

Cute figure! Perhaps I should try to get her too. I got ITEM #79116 when I was in Japan 8 years ago.

Weboshidori2 månader sedan#79996341I'm thinking about not buying any more figures for a while after the box came to me like this; it was too close a call. I was hoping to get Chen next, but I'll wait a while longer.
Anyways, I greatly enjoyed reading your article about making Aya's spell card; any future articles of yours I'll look forward to.

When you do eventually get around to buying Chen, I can definitely recommend her, a really nice little figure with quite a unique pose too. It is terrible when something gets damaged in the post though. I once got a figure shipped in no more than a few layers of tissue paper! That was horrible...

Thanks for the compliments by the way. I will certainly be posting some more articles soon, just waiting until I get a hold of my first camera so I can have some higher quality pictures to go with them. I'll be reading any other articles you post in the future as well.

EsmeAllan2 månader sedan#79995593Nice review. I wasn't planning on getting this figure but after having a look at your photos I'm certainly tempted, although I think I'll probably end up sticking to just buying the normal 1/8 scale of her from Griffon Enterprises for now.
She looks real cute and it's a shame about the box, especially considering that it seems you spent a lot of money on her.
Reading this really makes me want to get back into reviewing more of my touhou figures from Griffon.
