REVIEW: Kimetsu no Yaiba Kamado Tanjiro ARTFX J figure
Hello everyone! Here I am with the latest addition to my collection - and it is the Kotobukiya's ARTFX J figure of Kamado Tanjiro, whom most of us know as the beloved, kind and (literally) headstrong hero of the Kimetsu no Yaiba or Demon Slayer series.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/06/79/ee/0679ee395d0932faa355bcab942a3de2.gif
I believe this is the first Tanjiro scale figure that had been released so far, soon to be followed by the Aniplex one. When these figures were announced last year and the prototype figures came out, I immediately decided to go for this ARTFX J one - I personally felt the face and the hair was much more consistent with the original character despite him lacking the dragon. And also because I felt the ARTFX J Nezuko and Zenitsu seemed much better with all their combat poses, and I would of course want to go with only one set.

I had previously only owned four Kotobukiya figures, all from the ARTFX J line and all from the same series - which is the Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) series. That collection gave me a good overall impression of the ARTFX J line - the sculpt and paint was good and in line with the very reasonable prices they charged for their figures.

So I purchased this Tanjiro - I managed to get him during a sales period and ended up paying a total equivalent of JPY 8,800 inclusive of shipping for him.

And then the long wait for this figure began (he was released near end of May but my figure supplier ran into delays and when it was time to ship the figure, I decided to delay him a bit more to get him with his sister Nezuko - which I will also be reviewing soon). While I waited, I looked at other users' photos and comments on him - and some of them were not very good - and I started to feel apprehensive about the choice I had made. I also kept a lookout for anyone reviewing this figure on the site, but none popped up (so here I am doing it myself XD)

The parcel finally arrived yesterday to my delight (and anxiety of what I was about to unbox). I opened the box... and lo and behold, I needn't have worried. I LOVE this figure!

THE BOX & PACKAGING: 9.0/10
Despite Kotobukiya being one of the so-called middle-tier figure companies, I have always found their box designs to my absolute liking. This figure box is no exception, I love the green shade used and how they incorporated the black-and-white ink theme that Ufotable frequently utilizes in the anime series. The second I looked at Tanjiro's face through the box window and noted the sculpt and paint of the face, I knew the figure would not disappoint me.

The back of the box has a single image of the figure with a falling snow theme (so yes, the base is a snow base).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473579.jpeg

The packaging is very secure - the standard two plastic shells are fixed very tightly together! The manual comes taped to the bottom of the plastic shells. My figure comes with the bonus smiling head.

THE SCULPT: 9.0/10
THE PAINT: 9.0/10

First off, I love the scale size of Tanjiro. His scale size is just right for me for a 1/8 scale, not too small and not too big.

The figure comes in two separate pieces - the figure (technically, the figure itself is in two pieces - the head is removable and switchable) and the black Nichirin blade accessory. I am actually glad that the figure comes fixed to the base because I had a double nightmare earlier this week while I was spring-cleaning my display collection - I snapped the pegs off two older Megahouse One Piece figures (for added unwanted information XD, they were ITEM #93856 and ITEM #72245). I realized that prolonged display had caused these pegs to become brittle and stuck to the bottom of the figures' feet - I don't know if older Megahouse figures are more prone to these but I have always seen preowned figures of ITEM #93856 being sold with broken pegs.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473583.jpeg

Anyway back to this figure, my new phobia of plastic pegs made me happy to see him come attached to the base.

I love the sculpt and paint over his face and hair - I think the expression is definitely in character and looks like a proper Tanjiro. The paint over his eyes and scar are very good. The figure's scar is smaller than the actual character's in the series, but I guess they did not want it detracting attention from other features of his face. The hanafuda earrings are well detailed.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473586.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473587.jpeg

The paint over his hair is the best I have seen of all Tanjiro figures currently in the market (and one of the main reasons I passed over the Aniplex Tanjiro) - the burgundy shade with the darker roots is done really well. The hair spikes are sculpted well too, though I noted one or two tiny uneven patches over the spikes of hair at the back.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473588.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473589.jpeg

The bonus smiling face is also done well, but I would not use this face with his battle pose. This bonus comes uncharacteristic with the pose as he is never seen smiling whilst wielding his blade, and we never see any friendly spar.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473591.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473590.jpeg

The sculpt done over his clothes are very good - I like the folds over his shirt all the way down to his pants. The buttons and belt over his Demon Slayer uniform are given great detail as well, the paint over the black uniform even has shading. His fingernails are subtly done.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473630.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473631.jpeg

The paint is not as good over the checkered cloak - there are numerous paint bleeds here and there over the green and black. They are not particularly noticeable at first glance but if you stop and look, they are definitely obvious.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473633.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473632.jpeg

The back of the uniform also boasts nicely sculpted folds all the way to the bottom of the pants. The "metsu" character is painted well, but a seam line going through the middle of the back caused some paint loss in the middle of the character itself.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473636.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473637.jpeg

Great detail was given to his red sandals and the white cloth wrappings over both his legs. They even sculpted the outline of his toes through the socks.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473635.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473634.jpeg

The only accessory that comes with the Tanjiro figure is his black Nichirin blade, and it is very well detailed especially at the cross-guard and grip. The spines/spokes over the cross-guard are nicely done.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473655.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473591.jpeg

THE BASE: 7.5/10
And we now move onto the one aspect of the figure that had been hit with the most criticism from users even before the figure was released - the base. I personally am not a fan of the base myself but seeing it firsthand, it's not really all that bad. This is also partly because I cannot think of a base characteristic of Tanjiro myself - it cannot be water (that's Giyuu's), it cannot be flames (the anime is not far in yet, and also flames should be reserved for Rengoku) so I think Koto going with snow is pretty good (after all, Tanjiro made his debut in snow, saw his sister first as a demon in snow, and also completed his initial training and cut the boulder in snow. I do not think he ever did battle as a Demon Slayer in snow before though, if my memory serves right). But yes, the snow base is plain and does leave much to be desired.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473598.jpeg

On the base sculpt per se, I think Kotobukiya did a good job with the snow tracks of Tanjiro's feet - the effect that he has spread his feet apart ready for battle really comes off well here.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473599.jpeg

I am a believer of saving display space and the base shape is VERY ideal for said purpose - I think I would be able to fit six Kimetsu ARTFX figures in one Detolf panel if they all had the same base. I would honestly rate this base 7.5.

THE POSE: 9.0/10
This Tanjiro figure has a very dynamic battle pose - I love how the green cloak is flaring out and above his standard Demon Slayer uniform. The only nitpick I have regarding this pose is that the cloak pretty much covers all his upper clothing - I would have liked to have his body turned a bit more to the front rather than the side so we can see more of the Demon Slayer uniform while still maintaining the battle pose. That being said, it is still a very good pose.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473610.jpeg

Side poses. Note: I only realized I had the sword blade the wrong way up after I had taken the photos. Oh well XD

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473611.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473614.jpeg

I actually really love the back view where you can see the cloak lift to reveal the character over his Demon Slayer uniform. I thought the cloak flow was sculpted very nicely here.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473613.jpeg

And a smiling Tanjiro battle pose.

FINAL THOUGHTS
There are plenty of differing opinions regarding this figure, ranging from very bad to very good. I do not know if me reading negative opinions beforehand lowered my expectations so much - but when I received the actual thing, he came across as a great figure to me. I think the sculpt and paint of the entire figure is done very well, especially for the face and hair. His scale size is also just perfect for me personally - I wouldn't want him any smaller or bigger - and I hope Koto's subsequent Kimetsu figures adhere to this scale size in comparison. The pose is also of a dynamic battle one - despite me preferring a more frontal view. Except for some messy paintwork on the cloak, I don't really see anything negative to the figure. I actually even think the base, as plain as it is, is alright and saves a lot of space XD I paid a total of JPY 8k+ for this figure right to my doorstep and I think the quality and design is more than worthwhile for the price. I am very satisfied with this figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473697.jpeg

After I have unboxed both the ARTFX J Tanjiro and Nezuko and looked them over, I actually thought Tanjiro turned out better than Nezuko, despite the sister being the more sought-after figure. Their scales fit together well, Nezuko being the smaller one. And you can see how the shapes of their plain bases allow for flexible posing with minimum wasting of space.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473692.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473693.jpeg

I am set to continue with the ARTFX J Kimetsu line for now, and eagerly await my pre-ordered Zenitsu. There are several Inosuke, Giyuu and Shinobu figures due for release in future and I am anticipating Koto's Inosuke and Giyuu very much. The Megahouse G.E.M. Giyuu ITEM #872632 seems really fantastic - after all, Megahouse is one of the reliable companies that churn out fabulous overpriced figures from Shonen series - but I am excited to see how Kotobukiya will turn one out in comparison before making my purchase decision.

More pictures! The Nezuko box is a little gift my friend got for me - it's in the wrong colour but I still love it as a great display prop.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473694.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/07/11/2473695.jpeg

My final overall rating for this figure would be 9.0 out of 10, and I personally would recommend him if you are a fan of Kamado Tanjiro or the Kimetsu no Yaiba series in general. I think he is one of the better Tanjiro figures now, and I believe he will remain so even with comparison to other companies in future.

And I guess that is it for my review, I hope you enjoyed reading and I hope the review sheds a bit more light to others who wanted more information/photos on the figure aspects. Opinions/comments are welcome :)

PROS
- Sculpt and paint great and accurate to character
- Dynamic battle pose
- Fairly cheap price (though aftermarket ones have risen)
- Small box (shipping won't be expensive)

CONS
- Very plain base
- Messy paintwork over the cloak
- Personal opinion - side pose obscures front of clothing
- Aftermarket prices have risen (for now)

StaticBreed1 månad sedan#80325635Mhmmm I'll be honest... but I hope nobody gets offended, I want to be clear before that this is MY personal opinion!
For me his 'open mouth' expression doesn't happen that way in the anime, his lip paint is just too off for me to accept it (if I had this figure I wouldn't help myself but to redo the lip area, they messed up the red in my eyes.. I mean it looks like lipstick from here).. he is the more the kind of character who clenches his teeth anyway, ITEM #872444 isn't incredible either but I can feel more of the character already here.
For the optional smiling face, I don't know, I feel like it could of been way better, it doesn't feel warm to me like in the anime when he smiles. But tbh, putting that face on this pose was a very risky move from Kotobukiya, which almost feels rushed to get ahead of the market since they were the first to pop out a Pre-O.
Alter are my favorite brand, they rarely to never disappoint me so I am expecting big things.
YES!! Alter Shinobu, YES!! I am sure that one will be without a doubt in my liking.
Was a pleasure to read, helped me really get a feel for the figure. And although he's not for me, I can see why people do like him too.

Don't worry, no offence taken on my side at least :)
Ha, I guessed that it would be the mouth because I was turning the figure around wondering which part would cause dissatisfaction and I realized the most likely would be the mouth or the pose. He has his open-mouthed moments during battles too actually.

I completely agree about the smiling pose, maybe they should have done a clenched teeth bonus head instead (like a fellow user below mentioned a Breathing face).

Thanks for replying and reading the review! :)

evenstar881 månad sedan#80286012Really, why? I think Koto actually did fine with this Tanjiro :) The Aniplex Tanjiro isn't out yet but I feel that he does not have the right face and expression and hair colour from what I have seen in the prototype.
I myself am looking forward to the Alter Shinobu.
And thank you for reading :)

Scones1 månad sedan#80284849He looks so good. Great hair shading and clothing sculpt. His smiling expression is one of a knowing, composed warrior, yet a noble, welcoming one. Kotobukiya might not have the quality of GSC or Alter, but the nevertheless good quality for the price is a gift from the figure gods. His base is unique but, I agree, simple, and since he's in a battle pose and presumably fighting, it would be cool if footprints were on the base to show he's running around everywhere.
Thanks for the review, informative and enjoyable.

And thank you for reading, I am glad you enjoyed the review :)

galablue1 månad sedan#80284039One of the reasons I held off on this figure was because I have had my Koto figures break over time, so I'm really glad to hear that he is attached to his base. I was super disappointed in the plastic pegs on my YuYu boys. His base is still incredibly boring but I'm glad they went with a snow theme and also kept it small so that you don't just have a giant plastic disc. Although the design is boring, this is what keeps the figure affordable. To me, he's good for what you pay for, but I still don't see why they chose that 2nd face as the bonus ... to me it just doesn't fit in with the design of the overall figure at all. I feel like maybe a closed eyes breathing face plate would have been better, or maybe just a different bonus :P
I agree with you though that Koto's box design is amongst the best out there, they also manage to keep the boxes small for smaller characters, which me and my wallet appreciate.

Yes, the smiling face still bewilders me too, it does not fit the figure pose. I never thought about a breathing face plate before, but now that you mentioned it I think that's a very good idea!

And yes, he's definitely worth the price in my opinion - especially when I am only paying 8k yen total for him. I actually sometimes think collectors over-expect too much from companies like Kotobukiya despite the relatively cheaper price they are paying (a Megahouse Tanjiro would no doubt be close to double of this price). Maybe some collectors are too used to the great quality of the top-tier companies, but the bulk of my collection is formed by Megahouse One Piece figures and I still think this is a great Tanjiro figure. Guess it's really down to personal taste :)

Thunderr1 månad sedan#80283606Even though I've mentioned before that this Tanjirou wasn't as good based on the pictures of other users, now that I read your review of it this one is definitely one of the best Tanjirou around that I have seen so far on here. Unfortunately, I had to cancel mine because they didn't seem to be of the best quality. The box that you used behind Tanjirou looks amazing and fits the theme well and the figure. Other than that, this was a nice review to read and I expect one of the Nezuko when you have time to do that. I'm also still awaiting for the other Kimetsu figures of Kotobukiya to have a prototype soon as these ones and most of the other companies have been out for pre-order a while ago.
Thank you for reading and for the comment! I initially felt the same way looking at users' photos of him but I realized the lighting was not very good in those photos so I remained somewhat optimistic. When I did the review, I took the photos under normal white light to preserve as much of the original figure colour as possible :)

LoveChopper1 månad sedan#80283554this Tanjiro is awesome, pretty much how I expected him to be. not a fan of that base after seeing the painted prototype but it does not seem that bad based on your review picture.
on a separate note, heard horror stories of MH pegs snapping off and was reluctant to display my Strawhats. the clumsiness in me does not help (broke 3 out of 10 figures I first unboxed them. however, still succumb to temptations and display ITEM #189854, ITEM #166894, ITEM #805409, ITEM #582596, ITEM #189856, etc.... hope for the best when i need to move them >.<
juz curious. so now the 2 figures cannot stand? any chances of fixing?

I broke one peg on the Robin SA figure, she still has three others so she can stand as usual. I glued the peg back but I don't know how long it will hold up because they went back in the box anyway (I had been storing away my POPs because of limited display space). The Nami one has two pegs so she likewise can also stand as usual, but that peg is stuck in her foot. Luckily for me, the rest of the POPs came away without harm. I knew of the risk and was very careful handling them but those two still snapped regardless.
