REVIEW: Portrait of Pirates Neo Nico RobinREVIEW: Portrait of Pirates Neo Nico Robin

evenstar88evenstar883 månader sedanReview
This figure review will feature the One Piece Portrait of Pirates Neo Nico Robin figure, by Megahouse. The figure was modeled after Nico Robin's appearance and outfit in the Sykpiea arc.

http://i68.tinypic.com/66k7eb.jpg

I believe this was the second Nico Robin figure produced in the POP line by Megahouse (in 2008), the first being the POP Original Series (in 2004) - which is similar in design except she did not come with pegs to the base but with an extra pole to hold her instead (which I slightly abhor and thus chose not to get). There was also a third figure produced in the same design - a re-coloured metallic version - which was, personally to me, also disastrous given how neon-bright and cheap feel-y the colours were.

So I got this one right here - the Neo version - and am absolutely delighted with how good she was.

I don't know if I am one of the very few who think so - but I actually LOVED Robin's pre-timeskip look compared to her post-timeskip one. I felt she was more exotic-looking and desirable then - her eyes and features were very sharply defined then, now it just seems to be quite bland post-timeskip. But if they were gunning for the 'middle-aged woman' look, they definitely struck it with the post-timeskip look - she looks much older.

THE BOX: 7/10
Right off the bat, the box is small, very nice for SAL shipping if you are getting it from Japan. The design is not anything to shout about, the colour is brown with strips of yellow across that says 'P.O.P. Wanted Luffy Pirates' - which I found a bit funny because they reminded me of the tapes used at crime scenes.

Quite a plain box actually, and they featured images of two figures on this box - one of Robin and another of the POP Neo Sogeking - which is sort of irrelevant for the latter because he's not in the box, but I guess they did it because both of these figures were released as part of the line (?), I won't be getting him anyway. And this is an OLD figure, so the box design isn't expected to be as flashy or pretty as the newer ones.

THE PACKAGING: 9/10
Packaging is also in the standard figure packaging - two plastic shells held together. Pretty secure and offers enough protection to the figure and base inside.

THE BASE: 7/10
The base is very plain and transparent purple, with two pegs - and they have the Strawhat Pirates logo over the middle with the words 'Luffy Pirates' above and 'Nico Robin' below. Megahouse has definitely improved so much for the bases now that I have the older POPs in possession - you can definitely see how much the quality has improved over the years.

Again, nothing to shout about - but I am alright with this as it is an older figure, and the pegs fit the figure well and steady. The base size is also pretty small and compact so she can be displayed easily.

THE SCULPT: 9/10
THE PAINT: 8/10
The sculpt and paint is where this figure truly shines. In my opinion, this is probably the MOST accurate and beautiful representation of Robin there is.

http://i66.tinypic.com/2rp2vme.jpg

Her face is definitely sculpted very well in likeness to the pre-timeskip Robin, which shows just how good the company is even with their old figures. The paint is done very well on the face - and they even coloured her upper eyelids to lend that exotic sultry look to her features. Her hair is also sculpted well, the wide straight strands are well-defined.

http://i64.tinypic.com/15oggh5.jpg http://i66.tinypic.com/opth5t.jpg

Her clothes are also sculpted well - the colour of the yellow top is just right and matte, not bright yellow like her repaint (*cringe*) and goes well with the general tone of the figure. The top is textured just like in the manga/anime series, and I thought that was pretty neat. They also did the arm band and symbol over her left arm nicely, with the white tribal-like frills. Her chest is done sexy enough with a proper cleavage, but not a shove-it-in-your-face kind of bust.

The trousers are dark purple (again, thankfully not neon purple) and are sculpted well with the folds over the middle. There were some definite paint imperfections over the white belt, pretty conspicuous but not that huge of a bother for me.

The trouser folds are done well, and ESPECIALLY over the back where they have clearly outlined the curves of Robin's behind. Nothing too risque though.

There were some complaints on how strange her waist looked - how inhumanly thin it was in the middle, but I actually thought it was quite alright. I think her pose with the right arm up actually balanced how odd the waist appearance actually would have been if she did not have this particular pose. Shoes are plain purple, and fit well on the base.

There is only one accessory that comes with this figure - and that is the white hat Nico Robin was first seen wearing during the Alabasta arc, which she brings with her when she joins the Straw Hat crew. The hat here is well scuplted and nicely coloured, with indentations inside to fit the shape of her head.

THE POSE: 9/10
And here she is with the hat on. I both love AND hate this pose, because she looks pretty grand with the hat (as this is her usual getup when she goes on her usual archeological mission) but then the hat width obscures a lot of her face.

Alternatively, if you want to let her sexy face show clear through, then there is always the option to pose the hat on the base, to maximise every Nico Robin feature.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I thought this was one of the most accurate Nico Robin figures I had ever seen in the market, the face and expression were definitely spot-on and so impressive for an older figure. I almost kind of wished Megahouse had done her in the Ennies Lobby arc style instead - no offence to the Skypiea style, the orange-and-purple tribal looks really matches her well - but I think her Ennies Lobby outfit with this gorgeous face would have killed it in a fantastic way.

The paint job is alright, some bad spots here and there - but nothing of an eyesore for sure. The base is somewhat plain, but it is one of the early POPs and is already pretty good for one.

I highly recommend this figure if you are a Nico Robin fan or a One Piece fan in general - she is really pretty good and is the best pre-timeskip Robin figure for me. I rate her a 8/10.

PROS
- Very accurate face sculpt
- Great colour tone
- Small box

CONS
- Hat pose covers up her face
- Plain base
- A smidge of paint imperfection

evenstar88 (3 månader sedan) #49163714Oh yes Bellemere! I love that figure but not so much that I would spend close to 20k yen for her T.T Her price really inflated, like Carue - and I was a new collector so it wasn't very nice. XD

Yes she is expensive now, so Carue, i never believed in getting her since then :(

Wario54 (3 månader sedan) #49132935It's always nice to see reviews of the older POPs! I miss pre-timeskip Robin so much, she still looks good but I agree that she looks a lot blander post-timeskip.
Agreed ;)

maggie (3 månader sedan) #49137206Yeah I like old Shanks too! As well as Sogeking. Bellemere is an incredible sculpt for sure, I loved her a lot.
Yes, I’m selling almost all my POPs but I’m keeping my Nami, I just love her, and sogeking too. Considering keeping Shanks but I probably won’t.

The old Shanks had a more accurate face compared to the newer DX one, but I ended up getting up the DX one because of the imposing size and feel. Hope I will get my hands on the Neo Nami someday. And thanks for the link, it was a good read :)

I found this article very enlightening, though I can't say I care for the business strategy so much.
Bellemere is niche and probably not super popular... they re-released smoker and tashigi and I don't think the sales were that great, so Bellemere was out of the question I bet.
Edit: FYI here's the Banpresto school of thought, I found him very endearing otakumode.com/n...

Thank you for the link, i quite understand why they didn't, still i was amused by the choice of Smoker and Tashigi and not Bellemere, but i guess the fact she wasn't re-release makes her more valuable and more asked, it wouldn't have been the case if she ended re-release and shelf for years...
Guess it's better that way, rare are the old POP with a high value i believe, the recent one are expensive on daily basis and the fact that they are sold at japanese shop exclusively then that justified it ? I felt quite disappointed with the line the past few years, however hope is back with the few one they gave us :)

Tattsuns (3 månader sedan) #49145883Yeah right? I wonder why Bellemere is one of those rare POP that didn't received a renewal or resale treatment, she is very expensive now.

evenstar88 (3 månader sedan) #49118180Thanks! Yeah, not all of them are great, but I think a few of them are very desirable :)
I agree. I actually only like three Neo POPs - that is, the Skypiea Robin, Zoro and Nami. I have all but the latter - she's quite pricey and rare nowadays.
Yes, the shipping prices are especially painful if you are not buying from a local collector. Luckily this one was small so Japan SAL did not break my pocket.
To each their own, I guess.

This is my final round of selling so now it’s getting to the nitty gritty, the ones I honestly think are good. It was a bit painful selling Neo Robin and Bellemere, but I’m really into the scultures now so I suppose I have to wait for them to choose other characters to sculpt.

Tattsuns (3 månader sedan) #49015727Good review, i really like the neo line, the first POP line was very imperfect, even if the neo is not the most perfect it held a feeling and style that i appreciate when i look at them!
Thanks! Yeah, not all of them are great, but I think a few of them are very desirable :)

maggie (3 månader sedan) #49039117I love the feel of some of the select older POPs and how they look more like the source material instead of abusing the character to make money in an out of context way.

Talal (3 månader sedan) #49056334I love figures that comes in small box , it save the cost of shipment . I have seen some 1/8 figures scales with size of 1/4 scale . It takes huge space to store at home and increases the cost of shipment .

CaptainZ (3 månader sedan) #49010705Never been the biggest fan of the pre-time skip designs. I know a lot of people hate the post-skip since there more sexualized but Nico Robins has always been my weak spot in OP. That said I think for the price you can't do better than what Banpresto has been giving us, again on the condition you don't hate the newer style.
To each their own, I guess.
