If it's an older figure, you may also need to warm the legs so they can be bent back into position - wider stance figures are more prone to having their legs "drift" closer together, making them be a pain to get onto the stand (or in some cases, impossible without doing so...).
    When removing, you can do the same thing, though it can be a bit tougher, as you can't warm the peg holes directly. However, warming stuff up will allow a bit of flexibility so that it shouldn't try and take the pegs with it.
