As promised let's talk about Azur Lane and Girls Frontline! Wait, why are you screaming and running away? Get the fuck back here! Yes, it seems that a fair amount of users are not at all happy about Azur Lane getting more and more figures. And pretty much uncaring about Girls Frontline because let's be honest they only have three in the database and the rest are done by Hobbymax. I suppose this is just the nature of things, and really it's not a bad thing at all. People like different things, fair enough to say. It just so happened that I ended up liking a series that's getting plenty of flak and one that's... well, people don't really know about. So, you can kinda understand my hesitation with writing this as the last thing I want is a comment section filled to the brim telling me to kill myself and how what I like is terrible and I should really kill myself.

But fuck it! My stupidity has always overruled my rationality so I'm going to talk about these series because I like them! So, let's get down to the meat of this article. Azur Lane and Girls Frontline didn't get any Nendoroids this WonFes. No, Max Factory, you're not allowed to make Figmas of any of these. Go back to Fate Figmas, you're good with that. Now I'm not really bitter about lack of Nendoroids. Well, I mean I kinda am but I've been working on being patient. Hooray! But yes, Azur lane and Girls Frontline didn't get any Nendoroids which I was hoping for. Yet, the focus I have for this article isn't that "there are no GF/AL Nendoroids" but "how would they manage GF/AL Nendoroids".

Well make IDW first, that's for sure.

As I mentioned in my South Dakota article Azur Lane itself has hundreds of characters, much like Girls Frontline. So assuming that GSC decides to pick up the two series to make Nendoroids the question becomes who gets what. Well, starting off that's an easy enough question to answer. On the side of Azur Lane Takao, Atago, and Enterprise are pretty popular as are Unicorn, Belfast, and Prinz Eugen. On Girls Frontline M4A1, HK416, WA2000, UMP 45 and UMP 9 are all solid choices. So yeah, easy starting out. But the deeper GSC goes into the two the harder it'll be. Because realistically GSC just can't make every single character from the two series. Which is fine somewhat as there aren't tons of people yelling that Thompson needs a Nendoroid. Besides me, of course. On the positive side of things with so many different characters fans tend to flock to only a handful of characters. So GSC could easily make a Cleveland and not worry about Helena fans being upset. Again besides me.

But, come on, who wouldn't want Thompson?

On another note, even if a character isn't extremely popular that doesn't mean the design wouldn't sell. Come on, I've seen tons of people here buy figures based on looks alone. And nothing is wrong with that.

Although GSC might need to hold off on I-26. I don't think the world is ready for her.

So if GSC does decide to make Azur Lane and Girls Frontline Nendoroids they won't run out of colorful characters anytime soon. But at the same time, is that a good thing? Granted with popular series with large casts rule of probability will dictate someone will buy one of the characters. At the same time so many characters also tends to make people annoyed if that's the only thing they think is being produced. We've all seen it on MFC. And on the company side of things it might be that GSC might think that Girls Frontline and Azur Lane are, well, too much. Despite making everything I like, end of the day they're still a company that wants to make money. So maybe Azur lane and Girls Frontline may be too daungting with the choice of characters and they just want to focus on other series or ones they have the licenses to. And not to mention GSC might just be worried that these two games are "flash in the pan"; sure they're popular today, but will they be tomorrow? A catch-22 of sorts... I think.

Regardless, I'm not really going to blame GSC if they do or do not make Nendoroids from some of my favorite games. And despite my pessimistic writing I'm still hopeful maybe I'll get my Azur Lane and Girls Frontline Nendoroids. But, if at the end of the day they don't happen then it is what it is. No use bitching about... just means I'll go buy more Star Wars and Fate Nendoroids. Which, hey, isn't a bad trade off. Plus I always enjoy writing these rambling, speculative articles. Consider it a guilty pleasure of mine. So, of course this might just be all pie-in-the-sky thinking. Maybe the market isn't there or maybe GSC just doesn't feel the games are worthwhile for a Nendoroid release. Or maybe I'm just overthinking things. Likely the latter really. I'll be a happy camper if we get them but if we don't, like said, I don't think it'll be the end of the world for me. I learned that from accepting figure companies hate Brave Witches.

So that's it for me today. I'm ZF2, signing off. Here's Yamashiro pretending to be Gilgamesh.

mintea2 år sedan#38216358So, what are these two games exactly? Just a new answer to things like KanColle and TouRan?
Azur Lane is a sidescolling shooter with ships. Girl Frontline is basically like Kantai but with guns and no permdeath.

And not so much an “answer” but Azur Lane being “we’ll make our own game with blackjacks and hookers” and Girls Frontline... again being more on par with Kantai Collection but with guns.

First of all I'm going to be forever salty that non-jp manufacturer AL/GFL figures will never be in the database... It just feels incomplete. I know the origin is non-jp but both of the games are available in Japan now. In Japanese. Even if the original game is in chinese, mods should consider doing an exception for that. I just want to add the hobby max figures in my wishlist.... y_y

Now, GFL just released in japan yesterday so I wasn't expecting any new figures this wonfest (with the exception of hobby max)- FREEing's prototypes were a pleasant surprise. I feel that we might see more next year in the next summer wonfes. The JP pre-registrations reached over 500k pre-registered users, so I'm certain the game will do pretty well in Japan. As for US, it is very popular at the moment. I can tell because their booth at AX was flooded every single day, and they ran out of merch 30 minutes after the first day opening. Every time I walked near their booth, it was surrounded by so many people. I heard they got in trouble at one point because of how many people were standing there lol. A couple artists did GFL merch in the artist alley too, and the prints and charms that I saw were sold out before day one ended. I talked with an artist and she said she was surprised- she didn't print too many GFL charms because she wasn't expecting it to be so popular. (I regret not going earlier, I thought they wouldn't sell out too... y_y)

Now I don't think we will get GFL figmas soon considering max factory is doing original gun-wielding girl designs (ARMS NOTE) and tomytec is doing Little Armory figmas and nendos but I want to be wrong because I would definitely love GFL nendos ;_; But yeah, if the game does reaaally well in japan, then I'm most certain that we will get more figs besides hobby max ones (hopefully because guess what! hobby max GFL figures can't go in the database! :^) heck even ACtoys is doing a Lee Enfield bride figure and it will never be in the database. I'm so salty sry)

No comments about AL besides the fact that i'm surprised alter never did kancolle figures and now they're going all in for AL (same with koto- though they did make four kancolle scales and cu-poches). And again, I hope i'm wrong, but I don't see GSC doing azur lane figures considering how much they've been milking kancolle for the past 5 years (and there's still no Yahagi nendoroid..... rip)

ZoidsFanatic22 år sedan#38196406In Girls Frontline lore the units you use are called “T-Dolls”, Android robot things built after World War III. The company you work for uses them but they’re mentioned to be civilian T-Dolls. They’re not made for war but are pushed for it anyways. In turn their programming makes them identify with their gun. So, for example, HK416 hates M4A1 based on, well, the HK416 being based on the M4A1. Why they don’t wear more military appropriate attire I don’t fucking know.
Sorry, that became a long-winded reply. Basically you’re not wrong at all about the two games lacking what Kantai has.

Don't worry, I learned some interesting stuff. It's worth reading!
I very much want these games to compete with kanColle, not exactly with merchandise but gameplay/mechanics. If there's competition they have to rise to the challenge, meaning the game will improve in ways to keep the players. I desperately need this, been playing ever since the anime aired and the daily grind is really tiring by now.
(kancolle devs made some really questionable choices with the last few events too...)

gundamuk2 år sedan#38198557Very well said & informative, ie Kaga’s ponytail = funnel. I wasn’t aware of that.
Thanks to both you and Zoids for the background.

Glad to help. There's a bunch of silly ship trivia you can pick up while playing or reading the wiki, it helped me to appreciate and understand what they're going for.

I'd imagine GFL might pick up soon, after all the JP server has pretty much just launched within the last day or so.

I'm not sure I can see them committing to making a ton of Nendoroids like has happened with Kancolle, not unless they both get really really big in Japan.

nyugvo62 år sedan#38194694I'm not too familiar with Azur Lane and Girl's Frontline but I'll tell you my problems with them as a KanColle player.
Don't worry I won't say mean things, I have nothing against you or these games.
Aside from the chibi style gameplay I mean.
Depending on the artist, KanColle designs and personalities tend to have A TON of historical nods.
It might not be the pinnacle of art, but you can tell how they put at least some effort into it.
Ryuujou being flat because she had no superstucture.
Kaga's side ponytail representing her funnel and so on.
When I see Azur Lane, I see generic anime girls with animal ears. Which leads me to the first question.
If they're forcing the animal theme, why are Hiryuu and Soryuu BUNNIES? they're dragons if you go with their namesake.
Second, why is Atago behaving like an elder sister when she's not a nameship?
This lead me to the conclusion that it's not only a ripoff but no thought went into it.
A friend of mine is super into Girl's Frontline so I know those designs a bit better.
I was expecting the girls to wear clothes from the era the guns originate from.
Since they have mecha parts already, they should be gun parts. Something related to the design, not just random stuff thrown on.
I was also expecting them to have personality traits of notable users or something.
Again, no effort, just riding the popularity of a different franchise.
The lack of merchandise could be explained with both IPs being chinese, of course they'd rather be pushing domestic stuff.
But look on the bright side. Look how both Fate and KanColle merchandise is avoiding fan favorites or interesting designs.
I feel if either franchise would get figures it wouldn't please a lot of people since they'd make the safest characters, based on what they do with KanColle and Fate.

You’re not wrong about the character design being what it is. I play both games and I laugh at it. But I will say, in the very weak defense of Azur Lane and Girls Frontline they do have a reason for their designs. In Girls Frontline lore the units you use are called “T-Dolls”, Android robot things built after World War III.

As for Azur Lane, the shipgirls are not reincarnations of ships like in Kantai Collection. We... don’t actually know what they are even, bit the guess is either Androids or experimented-on humans. Anyhow, in-universe before the War the allies decided to careful work on their shipgirls resulting in the majority of Allied ships not featuring animal features. The Axis on the other hand weren’t as careful so their ships do feature animal ears and tails. The Japanese ones at least. The Germany ones feature scary sharks. But yes, it’s the classic “science experiments did it”... well technically alien science experiments because the real bad guys in Azur Lane are a bunch of aliens who do evil alien things.

Yeah both games plots are... I wouldn’t say stupid but are dumb in context. Which I don’t mind because I’m a twit. And in turn the character designs suffer. Or don’t, depending on your tastes. I like some designs more then others and think some are just plain stupid.

As for the writing, Kantai does have victory there. In Azur Lane the girls have a handful of lines, much then Girls Frontline. So their characters are much more developed then either Azur Lane and Girls Frontline. Not helping is GF and AL only came about because Kantai was popular.

As for the market thing, see both games are pushing foreign markets. Alongside the Chinese severs Azur Lane set up severs in Japan, Korea, and the English one is expected to open in September while Girls Frontline has Chinese, Korean, English, and I believe they are going to do a Japanese server soon. I think that is due in part to how popular FGO became overseas and both games saw an opportunity. Also not to mention GSC has produced Nendoroids based on Chinese properties before. So I wouldn’t completely overrule it.

Sorry, that became a long-winded reply. Basically you’re not wrong at all about the two games lacking what Kantai has. I still like the two and have fun with them though even with the issues I have. Plus me and my friends, the ones that do play Kantai, basically enjoy shitposting memes of all the games in our Discord. Makes it all the worthwhile.

As a fellow obscure-not-so-obscure mobage player, I can sympathize with the lack of figures of the games you play haha

My case being Onmyoji, and how impossible It is to get figures anywhere else but china. I was optimistic with the nendos but oof.

Anyways It was a nice read!
