! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This is a review of a figure in an bikini-armor-style outfit, which is why I tagged it NSFW !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of the adorable Chi-chi ENTRY #2482 from the original Dragon Ball series ENTRY #65 ! This figure ITEM #129518 is made by Banpresto ENTRY #7652 and comes from a line of higher-than-average priced prize figures SCultures ENTRY #38786 . This figure is specifically from the Zoukei Tenkaichi Budoukai 3 series ENTRY #42473 set.

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

A series like Dragon Ball doesn't need a lot of introduction here, as it's quite a classic. This figure is based on the original 80's manga and anime series. Both I find very recommendable for series of their era.

Chi-Chi is the daughter of the Ox-King and with that the princess of an area called Fire Mountain. Goku, our main character, crosses paths with her on his travels and 'accidentally' gets engaged by having a miscommunication with her. In this early part of the series, Chi-Chi is quite shy and gets easily stressed about fighting, despite her being very powerful. She fights mainly by throwing the blade on her helmet.

The reason why and how I got her

Dragon Ball was one of the first anime I watched on local television and Chi-Chi became quickly my favorite character from it! Up until this figure, Chi-Chi did not have any other bigger sized figures showing her in this outfit (after this one ITEM #432175 and ITEM #484216 got released). So back then, I picked up this one asap after release (as I missed out on pre-orders).

There is no specific artwork this figure was modelled after, but we see Chi-Chi sitting on the Flying Nimbus here. The design/colors of this figure mainly match the look of the anime, although on this figure the armor looks a lot more metallic.

Chi-Chi's box is typical for a prize figure and very compact in design. I like the big pictures of the figure on there. The back of the box shows a picture of the sculptor of the figure (Kiyama Hisatake ENTRY #8317 ), something I have never seen before on a figure box!

Considering there are bootlegs out there of this figure: The real one has an Toei authenticity sticker on the bottom right of the top flap. These stickers do get their own fakes a lot, but there are many guides on the internet on how to spot them.

The figure is put in my least favorite type of protection for prizes: In a plastic bag stuffed inbetween some cardboard.

After opening this figure, I really recommend you to hold onto the plastic packaging to prevent paint transfers if you ever need to box her up again.

Chi-Chi comes with the following display options:
- No base, without her helmet
- No base, with her helmet
- With base, without her helmet
- With base, with her helmet

The Figure - without helmet

The main figure is the easiest to review without her helmet!

The big seamline inbetween the front and back of her hair grabs quite a bit of attention, but except for that her first impression is so cute!

Looking at all the details!

Chi-Chi's face is completely adorable. Those huge eyes with eyelashes and the small blush! You can see a bit of her tongue in her open mouth, which has a seperate paint color. Chi-Chi's 'blocky' hair style is also captured well here and although it looks a bit chunky, you could say that is because of the art style.

I earlier shortly mentione the big seamline between the two hairpieces, unfortunately looking at this from up close also shows a shade difference between the front and back hair.

It's nice to see from the backside that quite some strands of hair were detailed in sculpt, and the cute hair twirls to the side were included too! A bit of a downside is the big copyright marking on the back of her head, but if you display Chi-Chi with her helmet, you won't see anything of that.

The color palette of this outfit is incredibly 80's, I love it! Chi-Chi's body also has quite a bit of shading.

Of which you can see this shading continued here. I was very impressed to see sculpt and shading for her collarbones and around her breasts. This does point out one flaw in the shading, though: how pale her head is in comparison.

Chi-Chi's bra armor has nice sculpt, but quite a lot of flaws in paint. After I just got her, I checked the entry pictures and saw that multiple other owners of this figure had similar paint letdowns. So it can be a bit hit-or-miss how your specific copy of this Chi-Chi figure will be.

Her gloves have some nice details with fake sewing lines and some wrinkles. Chi-Chi's hands are a bit simple, but still very fitting with the art style. With most viewing angles from this figure you won't notice them being a bit flat.

Also notice how Chi-Chi's belly sticks out a bit here, early on in this series she was drawn a bit pudgy, which I personally think only adds to her cuteness!

You can notice this a bit more from the side, where you can see she has very healthy legs!

It looks a bit painful to me, but would probably add to her sexiness of some: you can see the sides of her panty digging into her side.

What I like in this shot is that you can see quite some detail from the shoes and cape. I like how Banpresto didn't skip out on also detailing the bottom of the shoes!

Her other side, which is quite similar, unfortunately has a high amount of paint defects. With my specific copy they forgot to paint a big part of the cape and there are some paint defects on the shoes.

Chi-Chi's posing and her cape blocks a lot of the view of this area, so you will only see this if you flip her over. The panties have the correct details, but also here the paint wasn't applied very neatly.

Also notice some paint defects at the bottom of her legs, but who am I kidding, I know all of you are looking at the high amount of shading and sculpt with her butt cheeks!!

Chi-Chi's adorable look is only completed when she wears her matching helmet! As the helmet is a loose piece (no pegs, magnets or any other kind of system to hold it in place), you have to be very careful while handling her with her helmet on. Unfortunately the blade can not be removed from the helmet.

Looking at all the details!

At first glance, the helmet seems quite flawless, the sculpt is simple, but spot-on and they didn't forget any of the details, such as the holes on the side or next to the blade on top (which aren't actual holes, they are lowered parts of the PVC painted black to match her hair).

Unfortunately the helmet is not flawless. My specific copy has an air bubble in the see-through gem. There are also minor paint errors in the silver lines around the helmet and you can see a big seam line in the middle of the blade.

The Flying Nimbus has a lot of nice shading and I personally also really dig the sculpt. There are some small paint errors here and there and a big seamline in the middle, though.

Note about this figure

I had this figure on display for about 4 years and noticed this paint transfer on her while handling her for the pictures of this review:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/6_Zl1eAtoqGmhIJTP6B2h0wEqhBpbVrHTjeeuKaZw1j88-eEYbpRiMUK68GZg-CvF5oSs1_nN3Bq0a20U_0zbVwPJYdN9NIIGKNBp5WZpjDExZbEni8m9B7epCRGH09k4Gq44ysYxLyW1SNKJCyYs7BHtgrjQXwbjp_KvKKokOHaSQFOdiyVWvOsSLojmvuj4hKVQHEHFW_JAtidjBbLQZ4eMw_pa7Wi851L_bzbPpzAL9K6s1lz6yz4-7jt-m2cGns9Mnv76ugbpIGU0XbqPVImSHQ2Nw4qDoveWQhWcWZ5WnlWhKmx2uz09MmcgS0S0wpOEkYQTYEyQRzuftbMIf1HZYyB7OQsrg3iBhM_1KhjLS4S3mCXzMP1cR0KuB5mkgr3OzKpyfpZ1c--RxzOcpoXPl9cDDv17kMA3Ei48SIywXNQsqb95WTd4cAME5uKTe1QyY0vk-j7r6sJYEElv0R24Mj__VblyoGz4J-DAcWx1rvS9ORz-Uiv7qZMWGBpeBnf_88Q_7DO6Ndm_AonrP-wBWJs96Os3AZIwhxu8dIbvaGP4OfUlVjkiRg_RKTqoqbwf2xV8jRbT95OxHDaMS7Wfqwr3gZ1GrboLDg=w725-h966-no?.jpg

Which very highly possible, comes from the Flying Nimbus she has been sitting on. Be aware of this if you have her displayed for a longer time or were planning on buying her second hand!

The Points

Positive
- Absolutely adorable rendition of this character.
- I personally love how they sticked to her original body type!

Neutral
- Some big seamlines, like her hair and her knife.
- Hands are a bit 'flat'.

Negative
- Quite a lot of let-downs in paint, especially the armor.

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Quite a lot of detail for a prize figure! And I adore the body type and face they went for! Only downside are quite a bit of seamlines at varied parts.

Painting 6/10
Too much letdowns to rate this any higher. Especially for this being an 'more than regular price' prize figure. Especially the armor is messy.

Posing 9/10
Completely adorable. Not much else to say.

Base 8/10
If it wasn't for the big seamline and paint errors, I would have graded it higher as I especially love the Flying Nimbus being her base in this figure.

Packaging 7/10
Pretty basic prize figure box, minus points for her having no individual blister, making it not very safe to store her inside when not displayed.

Enjoyment 9/10
Chi-Chi is a really sentimental character for me and although this figure has quite a lot of flaws in paint, I just can't get over how cute she is. I really like having her in my collection.

Conclusion

If you're a fan of Chi-Chi or the original Dragon Ball series, this Chi-Chi is an absolute must-buy. It is, even with newer figures from her now, in my opinion the cutest Chi-Chi figure. If you're in general into cute looking shy girls and/or girls with a bit of a meat on their bones, she is definitely reccomendable too!

Availability

Her original release price was ¥1,8K, and I paid around ¥2,5K for her when I got her on the aftermarket, her price was alreasy increasing steadily! Nowadays you can expect to pay ¥3K-3,5K for a second hand one. If she is worth that price will really depend if you have any attachment for this character/series, as paying the current market price might be a bit expensive for the quality you will get.

And to finish it!

I did not find a display space for Chi-Chi yet, but here she is alongside some other cuties to indicate her size (she is a lot bigger than you might think)!

Maakie (5 månader sedan) #35228063That's indeed quite a bit lower than her current markt price! And maybe you can carefully touch up the eyes with a thin black marker? Good luck in cleaning/fixing her and enjoy this cutie! <3

Thanks a lot, I will see what I can do. :3

maggie (5 månader sedan) #35296829Yes! It was judged in the USA! I still need to get that Zoro that Oda himself chose!! I wasn't sure about the finished product so I held off, and there was a Goku I was interested in but I realized I have like 3-4 Goku scultures and there's only so many I need unless they're unique (one is the earlier child Goku and the other is him drinking from the water bottle).
Unfortunately I don't have pictures of errors to show you right now, most of my figures are packed up as I rotate them for display (though I need to take out a few scultures for my lit cases so I can prob get a pic soon). The most grievous error I have is my Smoker scultures, whose waistline piece from his pants doesn't line up and gaps with the other pieces so it seems like he's got a rip in his jeans. He's not meant to be displayed from that angle and his coat mostly covers it in any case but it's still irritating to me knowing it's there haha! Then I got a Luffy from the same set (I think the same set?) and he won't stay on his base to save his life. This is a problem many people commented on, and fitting pegs is kind of a basic necessity so I feel like it was possibly Banpresto's fault... though it was an odd shaped peg so perhaps it was a hard angle to mold.
I haven't had any horrific paint issues so far that I can remember, nothing like your chichi.
For where I purchase them, usually off Mandarake, Rakuten, or Amiami. However amiami is charging crazy amounts for shipping so lately I've been trying out Tokyo Otaku Mode when they have sales and I order enough to get free shipping (though I haven't gotten scultures from them, only IK and KOA, amazingly cheap with free shipping and a discount). 90% of the time I get them on Rakuten since I like to wait for release photos.

Ah, I was really tempted by the water bottle Goku before. Really like that one~ But it was this overly cute Chi-Chi that made me plunge for my first SCultures. :)

Ooh, that's too bad. :( Pegs that don't fit well are a problem even with scaled figures, but it's unfortunate for any figure that has it. With my Chi-Chi, I think the paint errors are also a bit too much, but the figure overall still looks good enough from a distance. And well, paint errors are more expected with prize figures than sculpting errors in my experience. At this moment I feel like I should be glad Chi-Chi doesn't have any of those fitting errors you mention. ^^''

Seems to me like I should keep an eye out for them on Rakuten then. :) Thanks for the info! :D

Maakie (5 månader sedan) #35296379Yes, it's very interesting! I read some articles about it before and if I remember it correctly, last year they also selected winners at an convention in the USA (Anime Expo if I remember correctly). I only thought about this now, but maybe the more unique way how these are getting in production, makes their prices a bit higher. Considering prices, I had a hard time finding this Chi-Chi for the ¥2,5K I bought her for (but almost all SCultures seem to rise in price). When she was up for pre-order, I saw her at most places for around ¥2K (most of the prize figures I buy are ¥1,2K-¥1,6K on average). ¥2K is absolutely not bad and can't expect perfect QC for it, but I think it does let people think a bit more about their purchase considering almost all other prize figures don't get to the magic '2' number. :P Where do you buy/pre-order your SCultures in general by the way? :)
Hrmm, the errors you are talking about, could me maybe because the sculptors are less experienced? Although I would hope/expect Banpresto to also correct there if needed. Do you have some close-up pictures from recent errors? It's a shame if they are indeed lowering the quality if a line is succesfull. :/

maggie (5 månader sedan) #35294707Yes, scultures, due to the nature of the competition, I think it inspires some very accurate sculpts as well as dynamic poses, as well as encourages risk-taking. I’m not sure if you know the nature of the line, but it’s a sculpting competition with voting that takes place at the end. Some sculpts really stand out, while others not so much. Many prize figures aren’t dynamic and as impressive as scultures, to me it really shows what some of these sculptors are capable of! They’re also allowed to choose what character they want to make, so we can occasionally get figures of characters that no one else is making :-)
As for the price, at initial release scultures aren’t any more or less than regular prize figures, in Japan at least. They’re in the Game Center prize games the same as everything else. I did notice that once Banpresto started distributing for sale (not as a prize) in other regions Japanese shops raised their prices from around $15USD to $18-20 and now I see some for $28 for preorder (which is ridiculous imho). I still usually get mine for under $20 when they are released, a great price for such complicated figures.
I did notice on some of my newer ones that there were more errors... with molding, gapping, assembly. Sometimes this happens when Banpresto has a successful line, they tend to downgrade the quality after a little while. I’m hoping that’s not the case. Errors can come to be during the molding process, it can be the sculptor’s fault if there was shrinkage or if the angles are bad for molds. I can’t really say definitely though!

Yes, it's very interesting!

Maakie (5 månader sedan) #35260099Hi! Thanks for your extensive reply! This is my first (and only) SCultures figure, so it was interesting to hear your opinion on it. SCultures indeed seem closer to source. When Megahouse announced their Chi-Chi I was bracing myself to see huge bazonga's on her and see her made super skinny, but luckily it wasn't that bad. Still, she looks a lot more closer to source material in this figure. So for now this figure fullfills all my Chi-Chi needs. :)
Her paint mishaps I can overlook for her price, but I do have to admit I expected a bit better, considering her release price was higher than an average prize figure. Still no regrets in buying her, she is absolutely adorable and I don't think any other Chi-Chi (soon) can top this! Now that you talk so positive about the SCultures line, I get really tempted to pick up Ox King...

Yes, scultures, due to the nature of the competition, I think it inspires some very accurate sculpts as well as dynamic poses, as well as encourages risk-taking.

They’re in the Game Center prize games the same as everything else. maggie (5 månader sedan) #35236322I really love scultures and feel they can be overlooked sometimes... people were booing the Lunch one on her cycle but I love it, and a lot of them have certainly shot up in price. I almost feel they created their own little niche for dragon ball and One piece, an option that's not just a static prize figure or an inaccurately stylized Megahouse figure. I just always feel it's a shame that Naruto wasn't let in on the Scultures line, it makes me sad at the missed opportunities.
In any case, I did skip over chichi but I do think she's well done and absolutely adorable! I'm thankful for your close-up evaluation of her, and though she has her paint mishaps, I hardly think it's much you notice when looking at her in your case with all the other figures.

Kendappa (5 månader sedan) #35227578Well, it's not that bad for me since I got her around 20 Dollar (shipping excluded though) and she looks very good despite the faded eyecolour. I really don't know, it's like the stickyness of old gashapons or Nendoroids which haven't been taken out of their boxes. Maybe it was stored away for too long.
Thanks for your advice. :3

That's indeed quite a bit lower than her current markt price! And maybe you can carefully touch up the eyes with a thin black marker? Good luck in cleaning/fixing her and enjoy this cutie! <3

Oh, what a coincidence you just got her! The stickiness/fading is weird though, mine has been on display for 4 years and the figure is only 5 years old. Seems like the previous owner wasn't really careful with her...? :x Anyway, I recommend a good wash with dish soap and a gentle toothbrush to remove the stickiness. :)

KiruKiru (5 månader sedan) #35220343soo cute and tiny! geez when i saw her picture by the figma i saw how small it was.
shes very cute tho.

She was actually bigger than I expected! Considering how small of a girl Chi-Chi is. If she would be standing upright, she could easily be an 1/7 or 1/8! But yeah she is cute~

Kendappa (5 månader sedan) #35220720Very cool review, I enjoyed reading it!
I just got her today secondhand and she is so cute! Although mine is a bit on the sticky side and the eyes seem to have a bit fading in colour... must be the age.

Thanks for reading it! :)
