Today I would like to take a closer look on a book from my absolutely favourite doujin circle, not only when it comes to Touhou Project. And it’s probably not hard for some of you to find out why. The book I am going to review was realesed in March 2012 with the title hanamusubi by Yayuyo. Yayuyo is your address for Kazami Yuuka illustrations.
Hanamusubi is a B5-sized 16 pages staple bound (this for real!) book filled with illustrations that pay tribute to the best Touhou character ever. The book contains six mostly two-sided full colour illustrations printed on a nice and sturdy paper. All of them are extremely beautiful.
One of the things I like the most about this circle is the very detailed art. Every hair on Yuuka’s head was drawn individually. It must take hours only to finish the lines on one illustration! I would never have the patience to draw pictures like that.
Every illustration in this book shows Yuuka in a slightly different style while each stays true to the typical Yayuyo style. Each image captured the lady’s personality very well. The order of the illustrations in this book is quite interesting: The first two illustrations show a calm and innocent, even sexy youkai lady. The next four pages show two very dark illustrations, one of them with an insanely laughing Yuuka who is obviously enjoying herself (not shown in this review). These pages are followed by some more colourful illustrations of a happy youkai girl. I am very to see a Lotus Land illustration here. On the final page we have an index with the title of each picture.
The order of the images in this book reminds me of hana no namae which I am going to review another time. I’m not sure if this is just a coincident or a reference to Yayuyo’s older work, though.
This brings my little review to an end. I am very happy to have hanamusubi in my (Yayuyo) collection. It is a collection of very fine and unique art. My only complain is that it is a little too short. How do they say? Brevity is the soul of wit.
