I am back from my trip to Osaka, and would like to announce that I have officially completed the Otaku Triple Crown.

I visited Akihabara in Tokyo a few years ago 72-multiverse.b..., and was only planning on visiting Nipponbashi in Osaka for this trip, but a change of plans resulted in a visit to Nagoya as well, and thus, a trip to Osu-Kannon.

Here is a view from the 26th floor of Hotel Nikko, where I stayed.

Osaka was preparing for Halloween, though I'm not quite sure how it's celebrated.

A couple of pictures in Nipponbashi:

I'll probably post more in-depth travel reports in one of my regular blogs in the next couple of weeks after I sort through all of my pictures.

The loot:

My luggage was 10kg under weight, and I could have added up to two additional pieces of luggage without any charge, but I don't think I spent more than US$250 on my purchases. It just came down to a matter of time, and having a normal as a travelling companion who wasn't down with otaku crap.

Overall it was a great trip. I would have loved to stay longer, but I'll just have to plan another trip at a future date.

I was too far away from Tokyo to visit Washonomiya Shrine, but I did visit the Masugata Shopping Arcade while in Kyoto. It was difficult to explain why I wanted to visit such a place though... It made me realize I should put off the KyoAni building and Moriguchishi Station (in Osaka) for some future visit.

felc57 (3 år sedan) #4070744I'm jealous! I was always curious as to how Japan was and wanted to visit it someday ever since I got into anime in general. The main thing I am worried about is the language barrier, as I don't speak Japanese at all. I was just wondering if you can speak Japanese? Otherwise, how does Japan treat foreigners that speak English only?
I can speak a bit of Japanese, but probably at the level of a 5 year old kid [probably even worse]. Osaka is a big tourist city though, with a very professional service industry, so you can get by with knowing English only. I would often see English speaking tourists just asking random people off the street where things were, and most were able to get an answer. Getting food is pretty easy too, even if you can't read since many restaurants will have English menus. Picture menus and replica food dishes at the store front help as well.

In general, I found that the people of Osaka and Kyoto were very friendly, and much less reserved than the people of Tokyo. I didn't get to spend as much time in Nagoya to get a real impression, but at Nagoya Castle, I spoke with one of the docents, and got the impression that they wanted to promote their own city for tourism, and looked to Osaka and Kyoto as a model.

twistofate (3 år sedan) #4070786Looks amazing, i love Japan. That view from your hotel is really cool. How long did you stay?
I stayed in Osaka for a bit over a week. Hotel Nikko where I stayed was also very convenient due to its location right over a subway station, which made getting to different places very easy.
